James-Paul Marin (AKA: The Owner)
"Never one to settle and embracing an unconventional path, I have made a series of wines using innovative winemaking techniques that explore Australia's cool climate regions and varieties".
After a fifteen year journey in the wine industry encompassing winemaking, business development, operational management and domestic and international sales; the opportunity to create my own wine company; Red Deer Station was a dream come true in 2012.
By 2015 I was selling 10,000 cases of Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon across three continents, regularly travelling the globe as a flying winemaker / brand ambassador and was recognised in the Top 100 New International Wine Brands in Shanghai.
However, one day I would be presenting to an influential wine community in a foreign country and the next, I was fighting a power struggle back home with my investors.
At the end of the day I felt my values as a winemaker were compromised and the authenticity of the wine and my vision was suffering. I relinquished control of my wine company and ended up walking away by late 2015.
Now, as one door closes another door opens, it is time for this maverick winemaker to go against the grain and start from scratch with a signature series of cool climate wines called Handcrafted Enfant Terrible Wines by James-Paul Marin.
James started his career in 2000 as a cellar hand at Scarpantoni Estate, (Mclaren Vale), while studying a Bachelor of Agricultural Science, Oenology at Adelaide University. This experience accumulated in being part of the winemaking team to win the Jimmy Watson Trophy.
Graduating from Post Graduate Diploma of Viticulture in 2003, it was time to pack a suitcase and become a flying winemaker. Over the pursuing years James completed multiple vintages in France, Italy and New Zealand. In 2006 the international travel came to a pause in the UK, where James took a role introducing [Yellow Tail] to the Brits.
By 2007 he was back in Australia making wine at one of Australia's largest wineries, Boar's Rock, Waikerie. Three vintages later, a sabbatical was calling. A move to Sydney followed where he undertook an MBA at UTS. Upon the completion of his MBA he joined the commercial service team at Boar's Rock in 2010.
A chance introduction came across his path, the Inspire Vintage (IVA) founders. Over the next three years he become integral to IVA building the company into Australia's 8th largest wine exporter to China.
From 2012 - 2015 I revived Red Deer Station Wines, where I brought together my shared passion for the environment and minimal intervention winemaking. Under my guidance many award winning wines and international accolades where achieved with the RDS portfolio.
My commitment has always been to produced wines that are as close to natural as possible. I make wines that retain “naturelle” fruit flavours and display an elegant full body palate. This creates beautiful, easy drinking, food friendly wines to be share with great company.
Now in 2016 it is time to put all I have learned by employing innovative winemaking techniques while exploring Australia's cool climate regions and varieties.
